• Description •
The National Center on Family Homelessness (www.familyhomelessness.org) will be hosting three roundtable forums in November and December in which policymakers, providers and advocates will discuss child homelessness in Florida. The forums will be led by the Honorable Kerry Murphy Healey, Lt. Governor of Massachusetts (2003-2007) and board member of The National Center; and Christina Jordan, director of the Campaign to End Child Homelessness on the following days and times:
1. 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 17 at the West Palm Beach Marriott
2. 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 18 at the Miami Marriott JW Hotel
3. Friday, December 4 in Tallahassee (more details to follow)
The purpose of the forums is to work together and discuss solutions to this tragedy. Consider these facts:
• Homeless children are sick four times more often than other children.
• They go hungry at twice the rate of their peers.
• They have three times the rate of emotional and behavioral problems compared to non-homeless children.
• By age 12, 83% had been exposed to at least one violent event.
• Florida ranks 43 out of 50 states in terms of high numbers of homeless children.
